1 Então, Elifaz, o temanita, respondeu e disse: 2 "Deveria um homem sábio responder com conhecimento inútil e se saciar com o vento do leste? 3 Deveria argumentar com conversa inútil ou com discursos com os quais ele não faça o bem?

1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said, 2 "Should a wise man answer with useless knowledge and fill himself with the east wind? 3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk or with speeches with which he can do no good?

4 Na verdade, tu diminuis o respeito por Deus; tu obstruis a devoção a Ele, 5 a tua iniquidade ensina à tua boca; tu escolhes ter a língua de um homem astuto. 6 Tua própria boca te condena, não a minha; de fato, teus próprios lábios testificam contra ti.

4 Indeed, you diminish respect for God; you obstruct meditation before him, 5 for your iniquity teaches your mouth; you choose to have the tongue of the crafty. 6 Your own mouth condemns you, not mine; indeed, your own lips testify against you.

7 És tu o primeiro homem que nasceu? Vieste tu à existência antes das montanhas? 8 Tens ouvido o conhecimento secreto de Deus? Tu limitas a sabedoria a ti mesmo? 9 O que sabes que nós não sabemos? O que compreendes o que nós já não compreendemos?

7 Are you the first man that was born? Were you brought into existence before the hills? 8 Have you heard the secret knowledge of God? Do you limit wisdom to yourself? 9 What do you know that we do not know? What do you understand that is not also in us?

10 Conosco estão ambos: os grisalhos e os homens idosos, os quais são bem mais velhos que teu pai. 11 As consolações de Deus são pequenas demais para ti; palavras muito brandas para ti?

10 With us are both the gray-headed and the very aged men who are much older than your father. 11 Are the consolations of God too small for you, the words that are gentle toward you?

12 Por que teu coração te leva para longe? Por que teus olhos brilham 13 e voltas teu espírito contra Deus e deixas sair tais palavras de tua boca? 14 O que é o homem para estar limpo? Como o nascido de mulher pode ser justo?

12 Why does your heart carry you away? Why do your eyes flash, 13 so that you turn your spirit against God and bring out such words from your mouth? 14 What is man that he should be clean? What is he who is born of a woman that he should be righteous?

15 Vê, Deus não confia nem mesmo em Seus santos; de fato, os céus não são puros à Sua vista. 16 Quanto menos limpo é aquele que é abominável e corrupto, que bebe a iniquidade como a água!

15 See, God puts no trust even in his holy ones; indeed, the heavens are not clean in his sight; 16 how much less clean is one who is abhorrent and corrupt, a man who drinks iniquity like water!

17 Escuta-me e eu te mostrarei; eu te anunciarei o que tenho visto, 18 coisas que os sábios ensinaram, as quais vieram de seus pais, coisas que seus ancestrais não ocultaram.

17 I will show you; listen to me; I will announce to you the things I have seen, 18 the things that wise men have passed down from their fathers, the things that their ancestors did not hide.

19 Estes eram seus antepassados, aos quais tão somente, a terra foi dada; entre eles, nenhum estranho jamais passou. 20 O homem perverso torce de dor todos os dias, o número de anos que estão reservados para o opressor sofrer. 21 Um som de terrores está em seus ouvidos; enquanto ele está na prosperidade, o destruidor vem sobre ele.

19 These were their ancestors, to whom alone the land was given, and among whom no stranger ever passed. 20 The wicked man twists in pain all his days, the number of years that are laid up for the oppressor to suffer. 21 A sound of terrors is in his ears; while he is in prosperity, the destroyer will come upon him.

22 Ele não acha que retornará das trevas; a espada espera por ele. 23 Ele vai a vários lugares à procura de pão, dizendo: 'Onde está?'. Ele sabe que o dia da escuridão está perto. 24 Desespero e angústia o deixam com medo; prevalecem contra ele, como um rei pronto para a batalha.

22 He does not think that he will return out of darkness; he has been marked out for the sword. 23 He goes to various places for bread, saying, 'Where is it?' He knows that the day of darkness is at hand. 24 Distress and anguish make him afraid; they prevail against him, as a king ready for battle.

25 Porque ele estendeu a mão contra Deus e se comportou orgulhosamente contra o Todo Poderoso. 26 Esse homem perverso corre até Deus com teimosia, com um escudo espesso.

25 Because he has reached out with his hand against God and has behaved proudly against the Almighty, 26 this wicked man runs at God with a stiff neck, with a thick shield.

27 Isto é verdade, mesmo que ele tenha coberto o rosto com sua gordura, acumule-a em sua cintura 28 e tenha vivido em cidades desoladas; em casas nas quais ninguém mais habita e que estavam prontas para se tornarem montes.

27 This is true, even though he has covered his face with his fat and gathered fat on his loins, 28 and has lived in desolate cities; in houses which no man inhabits now and which were ready to become heaps.

29 Ele não será rico; sua riqueza não durará; nem mesmo sua sombra durará na Terra. 30 Ele não se afastará das trevas; [ Várias versões modernas deixam de fora "Ele não se afastará das trevas", porque eles acreditam que esta expressão foi erroneamente copiada de 15:22 ]; uma chama incendiará seus ramos; irá embora pelo sopro da boca de Deus.[O texto hebraico tem "irá embora pelo sopro da boca de Deus", algumas versões modernas, incluindo a ULB e a UDB, interpretam como significando o sopro da boca de Deus. 29 He will not be rich; his wealth will not last and his possessions will not spread over the land. 30 He will not depart out of darkness; [[ Many modern translations leave out " He will not depart out of darkness " , because they believe that this expression was mistakenly copied from 15:22. ]] a flame will dry up his stalks; at the breath of God's mouth he will go away. [[ The copies of the ancient Hebrew text have " He will go away by the breath of his mouth " , which some modern translations interpret as meaning " the breath of God's mouth " . However, other modern translations follow the ancient Greek translation of the ancient Hebrew copies, which reads, " his flower will fall with the wind " . ]]

31 Que ele não confie em coisas inúteis, enganando a si mesmo; porque a inutilidade será sua recompensa. 32 Isso acontecerá antes do tempo de sua morte; seu ramo não se tornará verde. 33 Suas uvas verdes serão derrubadas como as da videira; ele deixará cair as suas flores como as da oliveira.

31 Let him not trust in useless things, deceiving himself; for uselessness will be his reward. 32 It will happen before his time should come to die; his palm branch will not be green. 33 He will drop his unripe grapes like a grapevine; he will cast off his flowers like the olive tree.

34 A companhia de pessoas sem Deus será estéril; o fogo consumirá suas tendas de propina. 35 Elas concebem o mal e dão luz à iniquidade; seus ventres concebem engano".

34 For the company of godless people will be barren; fire will consume their tents of bribery. 35 They conceive mischief and give birth to iniquity; their womb conceives deceit."
