1 Havia um homem na terra de Uz chamado Jó. Homem íntegro e reto que temia a Deus e se afastava do mal. 2 Jó teve sete filhos e três filhas. 3 Tinha sete mil ovelhas, três mil camelos, quinhentas juntas de bois, quinhentas jumentas e uma multidão de empregados. Ele era o maior de todos os homens do oriente.

1 There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job; and Job was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned from evil. 2 There were born to him seven sons and three daughters. 3 He possessed seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred donkeys and a great many servants. He was the man who was the greatest of all the people of the East.

4 Os filhos, no dia determinado para cada um, ofereciam uma festa em sua casa. Eles convidavam também suas três irmãs para comerem e beberem com eles. 5 Quando os dias da festa terminavam, Jó os chamava e os consagrava. Levantava-se cedo de manhã e oferecia holocaustos para cada um dos seus filhos, pois ele dizia: "Talvez os meus filhos tenham pecado e blasfemado contra Deus em seus corações". Jó sempre fazia isso.

4 On each son's assigned day, he would give a feast in his house. They would send and call for their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 When the days of the feast were over, Job would send for them and he would consecrate them. He would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings for each of his children, for he would say, "It may be that my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts." Job always did this.

6 Então, chegou o dia em que os filhos de Deus apresentaram-se diante de Yahweh, e, com eles, veio também Satanás. 7 Yahweh disse a Satanás: "De onde vens?". E Satanás respondeu a Yahweh, dizendo: "De rodear a Terra e andar por ela". 8 Yahweh disse a Satanás: "Observaste o meu servo Jó? Porque não existe ninguém como ele na Terra, homem íntegro e reto, que teme a Deus e se afasta do mal".

6 Then it was the day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Yahweh. Satan also came with them. 7 Yahweh said to Satan, "From where have you come?" Then Satan answered Yahweh and said, "From wandering on the earth, from going back and forth on it." 8 Yahweh said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and turns away from evil."

9 E Satanás respondeu a Yahweh: "Por acaso, Jó teme a Deus sem motivo? 10 Não fizeste um muro em volta dele, ao redor da sua casa e em tudo que está a sua volta? Abençoaste as obras das suas mãos e seu rebanho aumentou na terra. 11 Todavia, estende a Tua mão sobre tudo o que ele possui e vê se ele não blasfema contra Ti na Tua face". 12 Yahweh disse a Satanás: "Então, tudo o que ele possui está em teu poder. Só não estendas a tua mão sobre ele". E Satanás retirou-se da presença de Yahweh.

9 Then Satan answered Yahweh and said, "Is it for no reason that Job fears God? 10 Have you not put a barrier around him, around his house, and around all that is his from every side? You have blessed the deeds of his hands, and his livestock have spread throughout the land. 11 But now stretch out your hand and touch all that he has, and see if he does not curse you to your face." 12 Yahweh said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your hand. Only against him himself do not stretch out your hand." Then Satan went away from the presence of Yahweh.

13 Em certo dia, os filhos e as filhas de Jó estavam comendo e bebendo vinho na casa do irmão mais velho. 14 Um mensageiro veio a Jó e disse: "Os bois estavam lavrando e as jumentas pastando ao lado deles; 15 de repente, chegaram os sabeus e os atacaram e os levaram embora. Também mataram os servos ao fio de espada e só eu escapei para trazer-te a notícia".

13 It came about that on a certain day, his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house. 14 A messenger came to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were feeding beside them. 15 Then the Sabeans fell on them and took them away. As for the servants, they have struck them with the edge of the sword. I alone have escaped to make it known to you."

16 Enquanto ele falava, um outro mensageiro veio e disse: "Fogo de Deus caiu dos céus e queimou todas ovelhas e os servos; e só eu escapei para trazer-te a notícia". 17 Enquanto este ainda falava, um outro mensageiro chegou e disse: "Os caldeus formaram três grupos, atacaram os camelos e os levaram. Quanto aos servos, mataram ao fio espada e só eu escapei para trazer-te a notícia".

16 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, "The fire of God fell from the heavens and burned up the sheep and the servants. I alone have escaped to make it known to you." 17 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, "The Chaldeans formed three groups, made a raid on the camels, and have taken them away. As for the servants, they have struck them with the edge of the sword. I alone have escaped to make it known to you."

18 Enquanto este ainda falava, outro também chegou, dizendo: "Os teus filhos e as tuas filhas estavam comendo e bebendo vinho na casa do irmão mais velho, 19 veio um vento forte do deserto, atingiu os quatro cantos da casa, que caiu sobre eles e eles morreram; só eu escapei para trazer-te a notícia".

18 While he was yet speaking, another also came and said, "Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house. 19 A strong wind came from the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house. It fell on the young people, and they died. I alone have escaped to make it known to you."

20 Então, Jó levantou-se, rasgou sua túnica, rapou a sua cabeça, prostrou-se em terra e adorou a Deus. 21 E disse: "Nu, eu vim do ventre da minha mãe e, nu, eu voltarei para lá. Yahweh deu e Yahweh tirou. Bendito seja o nome de Yahweh". 22 Em tudo isso, Jó não pecou e nem acusou a Deus por qualquer maldade.

20 Then Job rose, tore his robe, shaved his head, lay facedown on the ground, and worshiped God. 21 He said, "I was naked when I came out of my mother's womb, and I will be naked when I will return there. It is Yahweh who gave, and it is Yahweh who has taken away. May the name of Yahweh be blessed." 22 In all this matter, Job did not sin, nor did he accuse God of wrongdoing.
