1 O mundo tinha uma só língua e uma só maneira de falar. 2 Partindo eles do oriente, acharam uma planície na terra de Sinar e se estabeleceram ali.

1 Now the whole earth used one language and had the same words. 2 As they journeyed in the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and they settled there.

3 E disseram uns aos outros: "Vinde, façamos tijolos e queimemo-los completamente". Eles usaram tijolos em vez de pedras, e o piche como argamassa. 4 E disseram: "Vinde, construamos uma cidade para nós, uma torre cujo topo alcance o céu, e façamos para nós um nome, a fim de que não nos espalhemos sobre a superfície da terra".

3 They said to one another, "Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They had brick instead of stone and tar as mortar. 4 They said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower whose top will reach to the sky, and let us make a name for ourselves. If we do not, we will be scattered across the surface of the whole earth."

5 E desceu Yahweh para ver a cidade e a torre que os filhos dos homens edificaram. 6 Yahweh disse: "Eis que todos são um só povo e falam uma só língua. Isso é o que começaram a fazer; agora não haverá restrição alguma para tudo o que intentarem fazer. 7 Vinde, desçamos e confundamos ali a sua língua, para que não entendam uns aos outros".

5 So Yahweh came down to see the city and the tower which the descendants of Adam had built. 6 Yahweh said, "Look, they are one people with the same language, and they are beginning to do this! Soon nothing that they intend to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language there, so that they may not understand each other."

8 E Yahweh os espalhou dali sobre toda a superfície da terra; e pararam de edificar a cidade. 9 Por isso foi chamada Babel, porque foi ali que Yahweh confundiu a língua de toda a terra e os espalhou sobre toda a face da terra.

8 So Yahweh scattered them from there across the surface of all the earth and they stopped building the city. 9 Therefore, its name was called Babel, because there Yahweh confused the language of the whole earth and from there Yahweh scattered them abroad over the surface of all the earth.

10 Estas são as gerações de Sem. Ele tinha cem anos de idade, quando gerou Arfaxade, dois anos depois do dilúvio. 11 Sem viveu quinhentos anos depois que gerou Arfaxade; também gerou outros filhos e filhas.

10 These were the descendants of Shem. Shem was a hundred years old, and he became the father of Arphaxad two years after the flood. 11 Shem lived five hundred years after he became the father of Arphaxad. He also became the father of other sons and daughters.

12 Arfaxade tinha trinta e cinco anos, quando gerou Selá. 13 Depois que gerou a Selá, Arfaxade viveu quatrocentos e três anos; também gerou outros filhos e filhas.

12 When Arphaxad had lived thirty-five years, he became the father of Shelah. 13 Arphaxad lived 403 years after he became the father of Shelah. He also became the father of other sons and daughters.

14 Selá tinha trinta anos quando gerou a Éber. 15 Selá viveu quatrocentos e três anos depois que gerou a Éber; também gerou outros filhos e filhas.

14 When Shelah had lived thirty years, he became the father of Eber. 15 Shelah lived 403 years after he became the father of Eber. He also became the father of other sons and daughters.

16 Éber tinha trinta e quatro anos quando gerou a Pelegue. 17 Éber viveu quatrocentos e trinta anos depois que gerou a Pelegue; também gerou outros filhos e filhas.

16 When Eber had lived thirty-four years, he became the father of Peleg. 17 Eber lived 430 years after he became the father of Peleg. He also became the father of other sons and daughters.

18 Pelegue tinha trinta anos, quando gerou a Reú. 19 Pelegue viveu duzentos e nove anos depois que gerou a Reú; também gerou outros filhos e filhas.

18 When Peleg had lived thirty years, he became the father of Reu. 19 Peleg lived 209 years after he became the father of Reu. He also became the father of other sons and daughters.

20 Reú tinha trinta e dois anos quando gerou a Serugue. 21 Reú viveu duzentos e sete anos depois que gerou a Serugue; também gerou outros filhos e filhas.

20 When Reu had lived thirty-two years, he became the father of Serug. 21 Reu lived 207 years after he became the father of Serug. He also became the father of other sons and daughters.

22 Serugue tinha trinta anos quando gerou a Naor. 23 Serugue viveu duzentos anos depois que gerou a Naor; também gerou outros filhos e filhas.

22 When Serug had lived thirty years, he became the father of Nahor. 23 Serug lived two hundred years after he became the father of Nahor. He also became the father of other sons and daughters.

24 Naor tinha vinte e nove anos quando gerou a Terá. 25 Naor viveu cento e dezenove anos depois que gerou a Terá. 26 Terá tinha setenta anos quando gerou a Abrão, Naor e Harã.

24 When Nahor had live twenty-nine years, he became the father of Terah. 25 Nahor lived 119 years after he became the father of Terah. He also became the father of other sons and daughters. 26 After Terah had lived seventy years, he became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

27 Estes são os descendentes de Terá. Terá gerou a Abrão, Naor e Harã; e Harã gerou a Ló. 28 Harã morreu na presença do seu pai Terá, na terra de seu nascimento, em Ur dos caldeus.

27 Now these were the descendants of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran, and Haran became the father of Lot. 28 Haran died in the presence of his father Terah in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans.

29 Abrão e Naor tomaram mulheres para si. O nome da mulher de Abrão era Sarai, e o nome da mulher de Naor era Milca; esta era filha de Harã, que foi pai de Milca e de Iscá. 30 Sarai era estéril: não tinha filhos.

29 Abram and Nahor took wives. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai and the name of Nahor's wife was Milkah, a daughter of Haran, who was the father of Milkah and Iskah. 30 Now Sarai was barren; she had no child.

31 Terá tomou seu filho Abrão e Ló, filho de seu filho, e a Sarai, sua nora, mulher de seu filho Abrão. E juntos deixaram Ur dos caldeus para ir à terra de Canaã. 32 Foram até Harã e estabeleceram-se ali. Terá viveu duzentos e cinco anos e depois morreu em Harã.

31 Terah took Abram his son, Lot the son of his son Haran, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife, and together they left Ur of the Chaldeans, to go into the land of Canaan. But they came to Haran and stayed there. 32 Terah lived 205 years and then died in Haran.
