1 Naquele dia, eles leram o livro de Moisés diante do povo. Foi encontrado nos escritos que nenhum dos amonitas ou moabitas deveria juntar-se ao povo de Deus, para sempre. 2 Isso ocorreu porque eles não vieram até o povo de Israel com pão e com água, mas contrataram Balaão para amaldiçoar Israel. Contudo, nosso Deus transformou a maldição em bênção. 3 Assim que eles ouviram a Lei, separaram de Israel cada pessoa estrangeira.

1 On that day they read in the Book of Moses in the hearing of the people. It was found written in it that no Ammonite or Moabite should come into the assembly of God, forever. 2 This was because they had not come to the people of Israel with bread and with water, but they had hired Balaam to curse Israel. However, our God turned the curse into a blessing. 3 As soon as they heard the law, they separated out from Israel every foreign person.

4 Antes disso, o sacerdote Eliasibe tinha sido encarregado dos depósitos da casa do nosso Deus. Ele era parente de Tobias. 5 Eliasibe preparou para Tobias uma sala grande onde, anteriormente, eles guardavam as ofertas de cereais, o incenso, os utensílios, os dízimos dos cereais, vinho novo e o óleo, que foram designados para os levitas, os cantores, os porteiros, e as contribuições para os sacerdotes.

4 Now before this Eliashib the priest was appointed over the storerooms of the house of our God. He was related to Tobiah. 5 Eliashib prepared for Tobiah a large storeroom, where previously they kept the grain offering, the incense, the articles, and the tithes of the grain, new wine, and the oil, which were commanded to be for the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the contributions for the priests.

6 Mas, durante todo esse tempo, eu não estava em Jerusalém. No trigésimo segundo ano do reinado de Artaxerxes, rei da Babilônia, fui ao rei. Depois de algum tempo, pedi ao rei permissão para partir, 7 e, então, retornei para Jerusalém. Eu percebi o mal que Eliasibe havia feito, dando a Tobias uma sala no pátio da casa de Deus.

6 But in all this time I was not in Jerusalem. For in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king. After some time I asked the king for permission to leave, 7 and I returned to Jerusalem. I understood the evil that Eliashib had done by giving Tobiah a storeroom in the courts of the house of God.

8 Eu estava muito irado e lancei todos os artigos domésticos da casa de Tobias para fora da sala. 9 Ordenei que purificassem as salas e recoloquei nelas os utensílios da casa de Deus, as ofertas de cereais e o incenso.

8 This was very displeasing to me and I threw all Tobiah's household articles out of the storeroom. 9 I ordered that they purify the storerooms, and I put back in them the articles of the house of God, the grain offerings, and the incense.

10 Fiquei sabendo que as porções dos levitas não lhes estavam sendo dadas, e que retornaram cada um para o seu campo, os levitas e os cantores que faziam a obra. 11 Então, confrontei os oficiais e disse: "Por que a casa de Deus é negligenciada?". Juntei-os e os coloquei nos seus postos.

10 I learned that the Levites' portions had not been given to them, and they had run away, each to his own field, the Levites and the singers who did the work. 11 So I confronted the officials and said, "Why is the house of God neglected?" I gathered them together and stationed them at their posts.

12 Então, todo o Judá trouxe o dízimo dos cereais, o vinho novo e o azeite para os depósitos. 13 Designei como tesoureiros dos depósitos Selemias, o sacerdote, e Zadoque, o escriba; e dos levitas, Pedaías. Junto a eles estavam Hanã, filho de Zacur, filho de Matanias, pois eram considerados confiáveis. Seus deveres eram distribuir os suprimentos a seus colegas. 14 Lembra-te, meu Deus, a respeito disso e não esqueças as boas obras que fiz para a casa de Deus e seus cultos.

12 Then all Judah brought in the tithe of the grain, the new wine, and the oil to the storehouses. 13 I appointed as treasurers over the storehouses Shelemiah the priest and Zadok the scribe, and from the Levites, Pedaiah. Next to them was Hanan son of Zaccur son of Mattaniah, for they were counted as trustworthy. Their duties were to distribute the supplies to their associates. 14 Call me to mind, my God, concerning this, and do not wipe out the good deeds that I have done for the house of my God and its services.

15 Naqueles dias, vi em Judá o povo pisando lagar no sábado, trazendo montões de cereais que eram carregados sobre os jumentos como também vinho, uvas, figos e todo tipo de carga pesada que traziam à Jerusalém no dia de sábado. Eu protestei por estarem vendendo alimento naquele dia.

15 In those days I saw in Judah people treading winepresses on the Sabbath and bringing in heaps of grain and loading them on donkeys, and also wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of heavy loads, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. I warned them against selling food on that day.

16 Homens de Tiro que moravam em Jerusalém trouxeram peixes e todo o tipo de mercadorias e as vendiam no sábado para as pessoas de Judá e na cidade! 17 Então, confrontei os líderes de Judá: "Que mal é este que estais fazendo, profanando o dia de sábado? 18 Acaso vossos pais também não fizeram isso? E nosso Deus não trouxe todo este mal sobre nós e sobre esta cidade? Agora, estais trazendo ira sobre Israel, profanando o sábado".

16 Men from Tyre living in Jerusalem brought in fish and all kinds of goods, and they sold them on the Sabbath to the people of Judah and in the city! 17 Then I confronted the nobles of Judah, "What is this evil thing you are doing, profaning the Sabbath day? 18 Did not your fathers do this? Did not our God bring all this evil on us and on this city? Now you are bringing more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath."

19 Quando escureceu sobre os portões de Jerusalém, antes do sábado, ordenei que as portas fossem fechadas e que não fossem abertas até depois do sábado. Posicionei alguns dos meus servos nos portões, para que nenhuma carga pudesse entrar no dia de sábado. 20 Os mercadores e vendedores de todos os tipos de mercadorias acamparam fora de Jerusalém uma ou duas vezes.

19 As soon as it became dark at the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors be shut and that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. I stationed some of my servants at the gates so no load could be brought in on the Sabbath day. 20 The merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares camped outside Jerusalem once or twice.

21 Mas eu lhes avisei: "Por que vós acampastes fora do muro? Se o fizerdes novamente, eu lançarei mão sobre vós!". Daquele tempo em diante, não tornaram a vir no sábado. 22 Então, ordenei aos levitas que se purificassem e viessem guardar as portas, para santificar o dia de sábado. Também nisso, Deus meu, lembra-te de mim; e tem misericórdia de mim, por causa da Aliança de lealdade que tens mostrado a mim.

21 But I warned them, "Why do you camp outside the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you!" From that time on they did not come on the Sabbath. 22 Then I commanded the Levites to purify themselves, and come and guard the gates, to sanctify the Sabbath day. Call me to mind for this also, my God, and have mercy on me because of the covenant loyalty you have toward me.

23 Naqueles dias, também vi Judeus que haviam se casado com mulheres de Asdode, Amom e Moabe. 24 Metade dos filhos deles falavam a língua de Asdode. Nenhum deles podia falar a língua de Judá, mas somente a língua de um dos outros povos.

23 In those days I also saw Jews that had married women of Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab. 24 Half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod. None of them knew how to speak the language of Judah, but only the language of one of the other peoples.

25 Eu os confrontei e os amaldiçoei, bati em alguns deles e arranquei-lhes os cabelos. Eu os fiz jurar por Deus, dizendo: "Não deis vossas filhas aos filhos deles, nem tomareis as filhas deles para os vossos filhos. 26 Salomão, rei de Israel, não pecou por causa dessas mulheres? Entre muitas nações não havia rei como ele, e ele foi amado pelo seu Deus, e Deus o fez rei sobre todo o Israel. No entanto, suas esposas estrangeiras fizeram com que ele pecasse. 27 Deveríamos, então, escutar-vos, fazer todo esse mal e agir de maneira traiçoeira contra nosso Deus, casando-nos com mulheres estrangeiras?".

25 I confronted them, and I cursed them, and I hit some of them and pulled out their hair. I made them swear by God, saying, "You will not give your daughters to their sons, or take their daughters for your sons, or for yourselves. 26 Did not Solomon king of Israel sin on account of these women? Among many nations there was no king like him, and he was loved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless, his foreign wives caused him to sin. 27 Should we then listen to you and do all this great evil, and act unfaithfully against our God by marrying foreign women?"

28 Um dos filhos de Joiada, filho de Eliasibe, o sumo sacerdote, era genro de Sambalate, o horonita. Por isso fiz com que ele fugisse da minha presença. 29 Lembra-te deles, meu Deus, porque contaminaram o sacerdócio, a aliança do sacerdócio e os levitas.

28 One of the sons of Joiada son of Eliashib the high priest was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite. Therefore I caused him to flee from my presence. 29 Call them to mind, my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites.

30 Assim, eu os purifiquei de todas as coisas estrangeiras e estabeleci deveres para os sacerdotes e os levitas, cada um na sua própria tarefa. 31 Providenciei também deveres para a oferta de madeiras nos tempos designados e para as prímicias. Lembra-te de mim, meu Deus, para meu o bem.

30 Thus I cleansed them from everything foreign, and established the duties of the priests and the Levites, each to his own task. 31 I provided for the wood offering at the appointed times and for the firstfruits. Call me to mind, my God, for good.
