1 Eu disse ao meu coração: "Vem agora; vou te testar com minha felicidade. Então experimenta a alegria". Mas olha, isso também é só uma ilusão. 2 Eu falei sobre o riso: "Isso é loucura"; e sobre o prazer: "Qual é a utilidade disso?".

1 I said in my heart, "Come now, I will test you with happiness. So enjoy pleasure." But look, this also is meaningless. 2 I said about laughter, "It is crazy," and about pleasure, "What use is it?"

3 Eu considerei em meu coração como satisfazer meus desejos com vinho. Deixei minha mente me guiar com sabedoria, embora ainda estivesse apegado à insensatez. Eu procurei descobrir o que é bom para as pessoas fazerem debaixo do céu, durante os dias de suas vidas.

3 I explored in my heart how to gratify myself with wine. I let my mind guide me with wisdom although I was still holding on to folly. I wanted to find out what is good for the children of mankind to do under heaven during the days of their lives.

4 Eu realizei grandes coisas. Construí casas e plantei vinhas para mim mesmo. 5 Cultivei pomares de árvores frutíferas para mim; plantei todo tipo de árvores frutíferas nele. 6 Eu criei reservatórios de água para irrigar um bosque onde as árvores estavam crescendo.

4 I accomplished great things. I built for myself houses and planted for myself vineyards. 5 I built for myself gardens and parks, and I planted all kinds of fruit trees in them. 6 I created pools of water to water a forest where trees were grown.

7 Eu adquiri escravos e escravas; tive escravos nascidos em meu palácio. Também tive grandes rebanhos e manadas de gado, muito mais do que qualquer outro rei que governou Jerusalém antes de mim. 8 Igualmente, acumulei para mim mesmo prata e ouro, os tesouros dos reis e províncias. Escolhi cantores e cantoras e tive concubinas, os prazeres dos filhos dos homens. [Versões modernas interpretam a última parte desse verso de diferentes maneiras: "tudo que agrada pessoas", "concubinas e tudo o que agrada homens" etc.]

7 I purchased male slaves and female slaves; I had slaves born in my palace. I also had large herds and flocks of livestock, much more than any king who ruled before me in Jerusalem. 8 I also accumulated for myself silver and gold, the treasures of kings and provinces. I got singers, both male and female, and many concubines, the delight of the children of men. [[ Many modern translations interpret the last part of this verse in different ways: " and many concubines, and everything that pleases men " or " and everything that pleases people " . ]]

9 Então, eu me tornei mais poderoso e rico do que todos os que viveram antes de mim, em Jerusalém, conservando comigo a sabedoria. 10 Tudo o que meus olhos desejaram não lhes neguei. Eu não neguei ao meu coração nenhum prazer, porque meu coração se encheu de alegria com todo meu trabalho, e o prazer foi a recompensa de todos os meus esforços.

9 So I became greater and wealthier than all who were before me in Jerusalem, and my wisdom remained with me. 10 Whatever my eyes desired,2 I did not withhold from them. I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure,2 because my heart rejoiced in all my labor2 and pleasure was my reward for all my labor.

11 Então, olhei para tudo o que minhas mãos haviam realizado e para o trabalho que fiz; mas, novamente, tudo era vaidade e como uma tentativa de agarrar o vento. Não havia proveito debaixo do sol. 12 Então, voltei a considerar a sabedoria e também a insensatez do tolo: que poderá fazer o rei? Apenas o que não tenha sido feito.

11 Then I looked on all the deeds that my hands had accomplished,2 and on the labor that I had done, but again, everything was meaningless—like chasing the wind.2 There was no profit under the sun in it. 12 Then I turned to consider wisdom,2 and also madness and folly. For what more can the man who becomes the next king do2 than what the king has already done?

13 Então, comecei a entender que sabedoria é melhor do que insensatez, exatamente como a luz é melhor do que as trevas. 14 O homem sábio utiliza seus olhos para enxergar aonde está indo, mas o insensato é como alguém que anda no escuro. Entretanto percebi que todos têm o mesmo destino.

13 Then I began to understand2 that wisdom has advantages over folly,2 just as light is more profitable than darkness. 14 The wise man uses his eyes in his head to see where he is going,2 but the fool walks in darkness, although I know the same event happens to all of them.

15 Então, eu disse em meu coração: o que acontece ao tolo também me acontecerá. Então, que diferença faz em ser muito sábio? Concluí em meu coração: isso também é apenas ilusão. 16 Tanto o homem sábio quanto o tolo não serão lembrados por muito tempo. Nos dias do porvir, tudo será esquecido. Assim como o tolo, o homem sábio também morre.

15 Then I said in my heart,2 "What happens to the fool,2 will also happen to me. So what difference does it make if I am very wise?"2 I concluded in my heart,2 "This too is meaningless." 16 For the wise man, like the fool, is not remembered for very long.2 In the days to come everything will have been long forgotten. The wise man dies just like the fool dies.

17 Então, detestei a vida porque achei má toda obra feita debaixo do sol, porque tudo é inútil, e como uma tentativa de agarrar o vento. 18 Eu odiei todas as minhas realizações pelas quais trabalhei debaixo do sol, porque devo deixá-las para trás, para o homem que me suceder.

17 So I detested life because all the work done under the sun was evil to me. This was because everything is meaningless—like chasing the wind. 18 I hated all my toil for which I had toiled under the sun because I must leave it behind to the man who comes after me.

19 Quem sabe se ele será um sábio ou um tolo? No entanto, ele será senhor sobre tudo o que meu trabalho e sabedoria construíram. Isso também é ilusão. 20 Portanto, meu coração começou a se desesperar por todo esforço que fiz debaixo do sol.

19 For who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will be master over everything under the sun that my labor and wisdom have built. This also is meaningless. 20 So I began to give my heart to despair over all the labor that I had done under the sun.

21 Pois pode haver alguém que trabalhe com sabedoria, com conhecimento e habilidade, mas deixará tudo o que fez para quem não fez nada disso. Isso também é ilusão e uma grande tragédia. 22 Pois que proveito a pessoa tem em trabalhar arduamente e tentar em seu coração completar o duro trabalho que realiza debaixo do sol? 23 Todo dia seu trabalho é penoso e estressante, e à noite sua alma não encontra descanso. Isso também é ilusão.

21 For there might be someone who labors with wisdom, knowledge, and skill, but he will leave everything he has to a man who has not made any of it. This also is meaningless—a great injustice. 22 What profit does a man gain from all the work and from the striving of heart that he labors at under the sun? 23 Every day his work is painful and stressful, so at night his soul does not find rest. This also is meaningless.

24 Não há nada melhor para alguém do que simplesmente comer e beber, e estar satisfeito do seu trabalho. Vi que, na verdade, tudo vem das mãos de Deus. 25 Pois quem pode comer ou ter algum tipo de prazer distante de Deus?

24 There is nothing better for a person than to simply eat and drink and find enjoyment in his labor. I saw that this truth comes from the hand of God. 25 For who can eat or who can have any kind of pleasure apart from God?

26 Porque a todo o que Lhe agrada Deus dá sabedoria, conhecimento e alegria. No entanto, para o pecador, Ele dá o trabalho de ajuntar e armazenar para entregá-lo a outro de quem Deus Se agrade. Isso também é vaidade e como uma tentativa de agarrar o vento.

26 For to a person who pleases him, God gives wisdom and knowledge and joy. However, to the sinner he gives the work of gathering and storing up so that he may give it away to someone who pleases God. This also is meaningless—like chasing the wind.
