1 Lembra-te do teu Criador nos dias da tua juventude, antes que venham os dias de dificuldade, e antes que cheguem os anos quando dirás: "Não tenho neles prazer". 2 Faze isso antes que se apague a luz do sol, da lua e das estrelas, e as nuvens escuras retornem após a chuva.

1 Also call to mind your Creator in the days of your youth,2 before the days of difficulty come,2 and before the years arrive when you say,3 "I have no pleasure in them"; 2 do this before the light of the sun and the moon and the stars grows dark,2 and dark clouds return after the rain.

3 Chegará o tempo quando tremerá o guardião do palácio, e os homens fortes se curvarão, e as mulheres cessarão seus moedores, por serem poucos, e aqueles que olham para fora das janelas já não verão claramente.

3 That will be the time when the palace guards will tremble,2 and strong men are bent over, and the women who grind cease because they are few, and those who look through windows become dim.

4 Chegará o tempo quando as portas serão fechadas na rua, e cessará o som da moagem; quando os homens ficarão assustados com o som de um pássaro, e o canto das vozes das meninas desaparecerá.

4 That will be the time when the doors are shut in the street,2 and the sound of grinding stops, when men are startled at the voice of a bird,2 and the singing of girls' voices fades away.

5 Chegará o tempo quando os homens terão medo de altura e de perigos nas estradas, quando a amendoeira florescer, quando os gafanhotos se arrastarem, e quando os desejos naturais falharem. Então, o homem irá para o lar eterno e os enlutados descerão pelas ruas.

5 That will be the time when men become afraid of heights2 and of terrors along the road, and when the almond tree blossoms,2 and when grasshoppers drag themselves along,2 and when natural desires fail. Then the man goes to his eternal home2 and the mourners go around in the streets.

6 Lembra-te do teu Criador antes que o fio de prata seja cortado, ou a taça dourada seja esmagada, ou o jarro, estilhaçado na primavera, ou a roda d'água seja quebrada no poço; 7 antes que o pó volte à terra, de onde veio, e o espírito retorne a Deus que o deu.

6 Call to mind your Creator2 before the silver cord is cut,2 or the golden bowl is crushed,2 or the pitcher is shattered at the spring,2 or the water wheel is broken at the well, 7 before the dust returns to the earth where it came from,2 and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

8 Vaidade das vaidades, diz o pregador, tudo é inútil. 9 O sábio era erudito e ensinava o conhecimento ao povo. Ele estudou e contemplou, e colocou em ordem muitos provérbios.

8 "Meaningless! Meaningless!" says the Teacher. "Everything is meaningless!" 9 The Teacher was wise and he taught the people knowledge. He studied and searched out and set in order many proverbs.

10 O pregador procurou escrever usando palavras vívidas e verdadeiras. 11 As palavras dos sábios são como aguilhões. Como pregos bem fixados são as palavras dos mestres nas coleções de seus provérbios, que são ministrados por um pastor.

10 The Teacher sought to write using vivid, upright words of truth. 11 The words of wise people are like goads. Like nails driven deeply are the words of the masters in collections of their proverbs, which are taught by one shepherd.

12 Meu filho, fica ciente também disto: a escrita de muitos livros não tem limite, e o muito estudar traz cansaço ao corpo.

12 My son, be aware of something more. The making of many books has no end, and much study brings weariness to the body.

13 O fim de tudo o que se tem ouvido é: teme a Deus, e guarda Seus mandamentos, pois esse é todo o dever da humanidade. 14 Porque Deus trará toda ação a julgamento, juntamente com tudo o que está oculto, seja ele bom ou mau.

13 The end of the matter2 after everything has been heard, is that you must fear God and keep his commandments,2 for this is the whole duty of mankind. 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment,2 along with every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.
