1 Estas são as palavras do pregador, o filho de Davi e rei em Jerusalém. 2 Vaidade das vaidades, diz o pregador: nada é importante. 3 Que lucro o homem obtém de todo o trabalho com que se afadiga debaixo do sol?

1 These are the words of the Teacher, the descendant of David and king in Jerusalem. 2 "Meaningless! Meaningless! says the Teacher. "Absolutely meaningless!2 Everything is meaningless!" 3 What profit does a man gain from all the work that he labors at under the sun?

4 Uma geração vai, outra geração vem, mas a terra permanece para sempre. 5 O sol nasce e se põe, e novamente se apressa a retornar ao lugar onde nasceu. 6 O vento sopra para o sul e circula ao redor para o norte, sempre indo pelo seu caminho e voltando novamente.

4 One generation goes,2 and another generation comes, but the earth remains forever. 5 The sun rises,2 and it goes down and hurries back to the place where it rises again. 6 The wind blows south2 and circles around to the north, always going around along its pathway2 and coming back again.

7 Todos os rios correm para o mar, mas o mar nunca se enche. Ao lugar para onde os rios vão, para ali, eles irão novamente. 8 Tudo se torna cansaço e ninguém pode explicar isso. Os olhos não ficam satisfeitos com o que veem, nem os ouvidos com o que ouvem.

7 All the rivers flow into the sea,2 but the sea is never full. To the place where the rivers go,2 there they go again. 8 Everything becomes wearisome,2 and no one can explain it. The eye is not satisfied by what it sees,2 nor is the ear fulfilled by what it hears.

9 O que foi é o que será, e o que se fez é o que se fará. Não há nada de novo debaixo do sol. 10 Há algo sobre o qual possa ser dito: "Vê! Isto é novo?" O que quer que exista já havia existido há muito tempo, em tempos antigos, muito antes de nós. 11 Ninguém parece lembrar-se daquilo que aconteceu nos tempos antigos, nem das coisas que ocorreram muito depois, e o que acontecerá no futuro, provavelmente, também não será lembrado".

9 Whatever has been is what will be,2 and whatever has been done is what will be done. There is nothing new under the sun. 10 Is there anything about which it may be said,2 'Look, this is new'? Whatever exists has already existed for a long time,2 during ages which came long before us. 11 No one seems to remember the things that happened in ancient times,2 and the things that happened much later2 and that will happen in the future will not likely be remembered either."

12 Eu sou o pregador, e tenho reinado sobre Israel em Jerusalém. 13 Apliquei minha mente a estudar e a procurar com sabedoria sobre tudo o que é feito debaixo dos céus. Essa procura é uma tarefa penosa que Deus entregou aos filhos dos homens para se ocuparem. 14 Tenho visto todas as obras que são feitas debaixo do sol, e tudo é inútil, como tentar agarrar o vento. 15 O que está distorcido não pode ser endireitado; o que falta não pode ser contado!

12 I am the Teacher, and I have been king over Israel in Jerusalem. 13 I applied my mind to study and to search out by wisdom everything that is done under heaven. That search is a burdensome task that God has given to the children of mankind to be busy with. 14 I have seen all the deeds that are done under the sun, and look, they all are meaningless and chasing the wind. 15 The twisted cannot be straightened! The missing cannot be counted!

16 Tenho falado ao meu coração, dizendo: "Vê! Adquiri mais sabedoria do que todos os que viveram antes de mim, em Jerusalém. Minha mente tem visto grande sabedoria e conhecimento". 17 Então, apliquei meu coração a conhecer a sabedoria e também a loucura e a tolice. Eu cheguei à compreensão de que isso também era uma tentativa de agarrar o vento. 18 Pois na abundância da sabedoria há muita frustração, e aquele que aumenta o saber, aumenta o sofrimento.

16 I have spoken to my heart, saying, "Look, I have acquired greater wisdom than all who were before me in Jerusalem. My mind has seen great wisdom and knowledge." 17 So I applied my heart to know wisdom and also madness and folly. I came to understand that this also was an attempt to shepherd the wind. 18 For in the abundance of wisdom there is much frustration, and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.
