1 Davi contou o número de soldados que estavam com ele e nomeou-lhes capitães de mil e capitães de cem. 2 Ele enviou um terço do seu exército sob o comando de Joabe, outro terço sob o comando de Abisai, filho de Zeruia, irmão de Joabe, e ainda outro terço sob o comando de Itai, o geteu. O rei disse ao exército: "Certamente, irei pessoalmente convosco".

1 David counted the soldiers who were with him and appointed captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them. 2 Then David sent out the army, one-third under the command of Joab, another third under the command of Abishai son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and still another third under the command of Ittai the Gittite. The king said to the army, "I will certainly go out with you myself, too."

3 Mas os homens lhe disseram: "Não deverás ir à batalha, pois, se nós fugirmos, eles não se importarão conosco, ou, se metade de nós perecer, ainda não se importarão. Porém, tu és digno de dez mil de nós! Por isso, será melhor que, na cidade, tu estejas pronto para nos ajudar". 4 Então, o rei respondeu-lhes: "Farei o que lhes parecer melhor". O rei estava ao lado dos portões da cidade, enquanto todo o exército saía às centenas e aos milhares.

3 But the men said, "You must not go to battle, for if we flee away they will not care about us, or if half of us die they will not care. But you are worth ten thousand of us! Therefore it is better that you be ready to help us from the city." 4 So the king answered them, "I will do whatever seems best to you." The king stood by the city gate while all the army went out by hundreds and by thousands.

5 O rei ordenou a Joabe, Abisai e Itai dizendo: "Sede cuidadosos, por minha causa, com o jovem Absalão". E todo o povo ouviu o rei ordenando isso aos capitães, a respeito de Absalão.

5 The king commanded Joab, Abishai, and Ittai saying, "Deal gently for my sake with the young man, with Absalom." All the people heard that the king had given the captains this command about Absalom.

6 Então, o exército saiu para o campo, contra Israel, e a batalha se espalhou pela floresta de Efraim. 7 O exército de Israel foi derrotado ali, diante dos soldados de Davi e, naquele dia, houve um grande massacre de vinte mil homens. 8 A batalha se estendeu por todas as partes do campo e mais homens foram mortos pela floresta do que pela espada.

6 So the army went out into the countryside against Israel; the battle spread into the forest of Ephraim. 7 The army of Israel was defeated there before the servants of David; there was a great slaughter there that day of twenty thousand men. 8 The battle spread throughout the whole countryside, and more men were consumed by the forest than by the sword.

9 Absalão encontrou alguns soldados do exército de Davi. Ele montava sua mula, a qual passou sob grossos galhos de um grande carvalho. Aconteceu que a cabeça de Absalão ficou presa nos galhos da árvore; ele ficou pendurado ali, entre os galhos e o chão, enquanto a mula seguiu pelo caminho. 10 Alguém viu isso e disse a Joabe. "Olha, eu vi Absalão pendurado num carvalho!". 11 Joabe disse ao homem que lhe contara sobre Absalão: "Tu o vistes! Por que não o abatestes, lançando-o por terra? Eu teria lhe dado dez siclos de prata e um cinto".

9 Absalom happened to meet some of David's servants. Absalom was riding his mule, and the mule went under the thick branches of a large oak tree, and his head was caught up in the tree branches. He was left dangling between the ground and the sky while the mule he was riding kept going. 10 Someone saw this and told Joab, "Look, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak tree!" 11 Joab said to the man who told him about Absalom, "Look! You saw him! Why did you not strike him down to the ground? I would have given you ten silver shekels and a belt."

12 O homem respondeu a Joabe: "Ainda que eu recebesse mil siclos de prata, eu não teria estendido as mãos contra o filho do rei, pois nós todos ouvimos as ordens do rei a ti, Abisai e Itai, dizendo: 'Ninguém deve tocar no jovem Absalão'. 13 Se eu arriscasse minha vida por essa desobediência (e nada fica em oculto ao rei), tu terias me abandonado".

12 The man replied to Joab, "Even if I received a thousand silver shekels, still I would not have reached out my hand against the king's son, because we all heard the king command you, Abishai, and Ittai, saying, 'No one must touch the young man Absalom.' 13 If I had risked my life by a falsehood (and there is nothing hidden from the king), you would have abandoned me."

14 Então, Joabe disse: "Eu não esperarei por ti". Assim, Joabe pegou três dardos e os lançou no coração de Absalão, atravessando-o quando este ainda estava vivo, pendurado no carvalho. 15 Então, dez jovens que carregavam a armadura de Joabe cercaram Absalão e o atacaram, matando-o.

14 Then Joab said, "I will not wait for you." So Joab took three javelins in his hand and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was still alive and hanging from the oak. 15 Then ten young men who carried Joab's armor surrounded Absalom, attacked him, and killed him.

16 Joabe tocou a trombeta e o exército regressou da perseguição a Israel, porque Joabe o reteve. 17 Tomaram Absalão e o lançaram numa grande cova, na floresta. Eles enterraram seu corpo sob uma grade pilha de pedras, enquanto todo o Israel fugia, cada homem para sua própria casa.

16 Then Joab blew the trumpet, and the army returned from pursuing Israel, for Joab held back the army. 17 They took Absalom and threw him into a large pit in the forest; they buried his body under a very large pile of stones, while all Israel fled, every man to his own tent.

18 Ora, Absalão, quando vivo, construiu para si mesmo um grande altar no vale do rei, e disse: "Eu não tenho filho para perpetuar a memória do meu nome". Logo, ele colocou seu próprio nome naquele altar, que é chamado de Monumento a Absalão até o dia de hoje.

18 Now Absalom, while still alive, had built for himself a large stone pillar in the King's Valley, for he said, "I have no son to carry along the memory of my name." He named the pillar after his own name, so it is called Absalom's Monument to this very day.

19 Então, Aimaaz, filho de Zadoque, disse: "Deixa-me ir correndo ao rei para levar as boas notícias, de como Yahweh o resgatou da mão dos seus inimigos". 20 Joabe respondeu a ele: "Tu não serás, hoje, o portador das notícias; tu o farás em outro dia. Hoje, tu não darás nenhuma notícia porque o filho do rei está morto".

19 Then Ahimaaz son of Zadok said, "Let me now run to the king with the good news, how Yahweh has rescued him from the hand of his enemies." 20 Joab answered him, "You will not be the bearer of news today; you must do it another day. Today you will bear no news because the king's son is dead."

21 Então, Joabe disse ao cuxita: "Vai, dize ao rei o que vistes". O cuxita curvou-se diante de Joabe e correu. 22 Aimaaz, filho de Zadoque, disse novamente a Joabe: "Independentemente do que possa acontecer, por favor, deixa-me também correr e seguir o cuxita". Joabe respondeu: "Por que tu desejas correr, meu filho, visto que não terás nenhuma recompensa pela notícia?". 23 E disse Aimaaz: "Aconteça o que for, irei". Joabe, então, respondeu: "Corra". Aimaaz correu pelo caminho da planície e ultrapassou o cuxita.

21 Then Joab said to a Cushite, "Go, tell the king what you have seen." The Cushite bowed down to Joab, and ran. 22 Then Ahimaaz son of Zadok said again to Joab, "Regardless of what may happen, please let me also run and follow the Cushite." Joab replied, "Why do you want to run, my son, seeing that you will have no reward for the news?" 23 "Whatever happens," said Ahimaaz, "I will run." So Joab answered him, "Run." Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the plain, and outran the Cushite.

24 Davi estava sentado entre os portões internos e externos. O sentinela subiu ao telhado do portão e levantou seus olhos por cima dos muros. Quando olhou, viu um homem se aproximando, correndo sozinho. 25 O sentinela anunciou e disse ao rei. Então, o rei disse: "Se ele está só, deve haver notícias em seus lábios". O corredor se aproximou da cidade.

24 Now David was sitting between the inner and outer gates. The watchman had gone up to the roof of the gate to the wall and raised his eyes. As he looked, he saw a man approaching, running alone. 25 The watchman shouted out and told the king. Then the king said, "If he is alone, there is news in his mouth." The runner came closer and neared the city.

26 Logo, o sentinela viu outro homem correndo, e o sentinela anunciou ao vigia do portão. Ele disse: "Olha, há outro homem correndo sozinho". O rei disse: "Ele está trazendo notícias também". 27 O sentinela, disse: "Eu penso que o homem que corre na frente se parece com Aimaaz, filho de Zadoque". O rei disse: "Ele é um homem bom e está vindo com boas notícias".

26 Then the watchman noticed another man running, and the watchman called to the gatekeeper; he said, "Look, there is another man running alone." The king said, "He is also bringing news." 27 So the watchman said, "I think the running of the man in front is like the running of Ahimaaz son of Zadok." The king said, "He is a good man and is coming with good news."

28 Então, Aimaaz chamou o rei: "Está tudo bem". E ele se curvou diante do rei com seu rosto na terra e disse: "Bendito seja Yahweh teu Deus! Ele entregou os homens que se levantaram contra meu senhor, o rei". 29 Então, o rei respondeu: "Está tudo bem com o jovem Absalão?". Aimaaz respondeu: "Quando Joabe, o servo do rei, me enviou a ti, rei, eu vi uma grande confusão, mas eu não sabia o que era". 30 O rei disse: "Fica aqui ao lado". Então, Aimaaz aguardou ali ao lado.

28 Then Ahimaaz called out and said to the king, "All is well." He bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground and said, "Blessed be Yahweh your God! He has delivered the men who lifted up their hand against my master the king." 29 So the king replied, "Is it well with the young man Absalom?" Ahimaaz answered, "When Joab sent me, the king's servant, to you, king, I saw a great disturbance, but I did not know what it was." 30 Then the king said, "Turn aside and stand here." So Ahimaaz turned aside, and stood still.

31 Imediatamente, o cuxita chegou e disse: "Tenho boas notícias ao meu senhor, o rei, pois hoje Yahweh te vingou de todos os que se levantaram contra ti". 32 O rei, então, disse ao cuxita: "Está tudo bem com o jovem Absalão?". O cuxita respondeu: "Os inimigos do meu senhor, o rei, e todos os que se levantaram contra ti para fazer-te mal sejam como aquele jovem". 33 Então, o rei ficou profundamente abalado, subiu aos aposentos acima do portão e chorou. Andando de um lado para outro, lamentava: "Meu filho Absalão, meu filho, meu filho Absalão! Meu desejo é que eu tivesse morrido em teu lugar, Absalão, meu filho, meu filho!".

31 Immediately then the Cushite arrived and said, "There is good news for my master the king, for Yahweh has avenged you today from all who rose up against you." 32 Then the king said to the Cushite, "Is it well with the young man Absalom?" The Cushite answered, "The enemies of my master the king, and all who rise up against you to do harm to you, should be as that young man is." 33 Then the king was deeply unnerved, and he went up to the room over the gate and wept. As he went he grieved, "My son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! I wish I had died instead of you, Absalom, my son, my son!"
