1 Quando Jeremias terminou de proclamar ao povo todas as palavras que Yahweh, seu Deus, o mandou dizer, 2 Azarias, filho de Hosaías, Joanã, filho de Careá, e todos os homens arrogantes disseram para Jeremias: "Tu estás dizendo mentiras. Yahweh, nosso Deus, não te enviou para dizer: 'Não entreis no Egito para viverdes lá.' 3 Mas é Baruque, filho de Nerias, que está te incitando contra nós, para nos entregar nas mãos dos caldeus, para que causem nossa morte e nos façam cativos na Babilônia."

1 It happened that Jeremiah finished proclaiming to all the people all the words of Yahweh their God that Yahweh their God had told him to say. 2 Azariah son of Hoshaiah, Johanan son of Kareah, and all the arrogant men said to Jeremiah, "You are telling lies. Yahweh our God has not sent you to say, 'Do not go to Egypt to live there.' 3 For Baruch son of Neriah is inciting you against us to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, for you to cause our death and to make us captives in Babylon."

4 Então, Joanã, filho de Careá, todos os príncipes do exército e todas as pessoas, desobedeceram à voz de Yahweh e habitaram na terra de Judá. 5 Joanã, filho de Careá e todos os comandantes dos exércitos tiraram todos os remanescentes de Judá, que retornaram das nações para onde eles foram dispersados, para viverem na terra de Judá. 6 Eles tiraram os homens e as mulheres, as crianças e as filhas do rei, e toda pessoa a quem Nebuzaradã, o capitão da guarda do rei, havia deixado permanecer com Gedalias, filho de Aicam, filho de Safã. Eles também tiraram Jeremias, o profeta, e Baruque, filho de Nerias. 7 Eles foram à terra do Egito, à Tafnes, porque desobedeceram à voz de Yahweh.

4 So Johanan son of Kareah, all the princes of the army, and all the people refused to listen to Yahweh's voice to live in the land of Judah. 5 Johanan son of Kareah and all the army commanders took away all the remnant of Judah who had returned from all the nations where they had been scattered to live in the land of Judah. 6 They took the men and women, the children and the king's daughters, and every person whom Nebuzaradan, the commander of the king's bodyguards, had let remain with Gedaliah son of Ahikam son of Shaphan. They also took Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch son of Neriah. 7 They went to the land of Egypt, to Tahpanhes, because they did not listen to Yahweh's voice.

8 Então, a palavra de Yahweh veio a Jeremias, em Tafnes, e disse: 9 "Pega algumas pedras largas em tuas mãos e, à vista do povo de Judá, esconda-as no pavimento de cimento, na entrada da casa de Faraó, em Tafnes. 10 Então, dize-lhes: 'Assim diz Yahweh dos Exércitos, Deus de Israel: Vede, Eu estou prestes a enviar mensageiros e trazer Nabucodonosor, rei da Babilônia, Meu servo. Colocarei seu trono sobre essas pedras que tu, Jeremias, enterraste. Nabucodonosor colocará seu pavilhão real sobre elas.

8 So the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying, 9 "Take some large stones in your hand, and, in the sight of the people of Judah, hide them in the mortar in the pavement at the entrance to Pharaoh's house in Tahpanhes." 10 Then say to them, "Yahweh of hosts, God of Israel, says this, 'See, I am about to send messengers to take Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon as my servant. I will place his throne over these stones that you, Jeremiah, have buried. Nebuchadnezzar will place his pavilion over them.

11 Pois ele virá e atacará a terra do Egito. Qualquer um que estiver destinado à morte, será entregue à morte. Qualquer um que estiver destinado ao cativeiro, será levado cativo. E qualquer um que estiver destinado à espada, será entregue à espada. 12 Então, Eu colocarei fogo nos templos dos deuses do Egito. Nabucodonosor os queimará ou os capturará. Ele limpará a terra do Egito, assim como os pastores limpam os insetos de suas vestes. Ele sairá daquele lugar intacto. Quebrará os pilares sagrados de Bete-Semes na terra do Egito. Ele queimará os templos dos deuses egípicios." 13

11 For he will come and attack the land of Egypt. Anyone who is assigned to death will be given to death. Anyone who is assigned to captivity will be taken captive. Anyone who is assigned to the sword will be given to the sword. 12 Then I will light a fire in the temples of Egypt's gods. Nebuchadnezzar will burn them or capture them. He will clean out the land of Egypt just as shepherds clean vermin off their clothes. He will go out from that place in victory. [[ Instead of " I will light a fire " , some ancient and modern translations have " he will light a fire " . ]] 13 He will break the stone pillars at Heliopolis in the land of Egypt. He will burn the temples of Egypt's gods.'"
