1 Quando os adversários de Judá e de Benjamim ouviram que o povo que havia voltado do exílio estava construindo o templo para Yahweh, o Deus de Israel, 2 foram falar com Zorobabel e os chefes de famílias de seus antepassados, e disseram: "Permiti que possamos ajudar a construir o templo, pois, como vós, buscamos a vosso Deus e temos oferecido sacrifícios a Ele desde os dias em que Esar-Hadom, rei da Assíria, nos trouxe para este lugar".

1 Now some enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the people who had been exiled were now building a temple for Yahweh, the God of Israel. 2 So they approached Zerubbabel and the heads of their ancestors' clans. They said to them, "Let us build with you, for, like you, we seek your God and have sacrificed to him since the days when Esarhaddon, king of Assyria, brought us to this place."

3 Porém Zorobabel, Jesua e outros chefes de famílias de Israel lhes responderam: "Não sois vós, mas nós que devemos construir o templo do nosso Deus. Nós mesmos, sozinhos, o construiremos para Yahweh, o Deus de Israel, assim como Ciro, o rei da Pérsia, nos ordenou".

3 But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of their ancestors' clans said, "It is not you, but we who must build the house of our God, for it is we who will build for Yahweh, the God of Israel, just as King Cyrus of Persia commanded."

4 Então o povo da terra passou a desanimar o povo de Judá e fez com que os judeus ficassem com medo de construir. 5 Eles também subornaram os conselheiros para frustrar seus planos. Fizeram isso durante todo o reinado de Ciro até os dias do reinado de Dario, rei da Pérsia. 6 Assim, no princípio do reinado de Xerxes, eles escreveram uma acusação contra os habitantes de Judá e Jerusalém.

4 So the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah; they made the Judeans afraid to build. 5 They also bribed counselors to frustrate their plans. They did this during all of Cyrus's days and into the reign of Darius king of Persia. 6 Then at the beginning of Ahasuerus's [[ Also known as " Xerxes " . ]] reign they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

7 Foi durante o reinado de Artaxerxes que Bislão, Mitredate, Tabeel e seus companheiros lhe escreveram. A carta foi escrita em aramaico, com tradução. 8 Assim Reum, o comandante, e Sinsai, o escriba, escreveram a Artaxerxes sobre Jerusalém.

7 It was during the days of Artaxerxes that Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and their associates wrote to King Artaxerxes of Persia. The letter was written in Aramaic and translated. 8 Rehum the commander and Shimshai the scribe wrote this way to King Artaxerxes about Jerusalem.

9 Então Reum, Sinsai e seus companheiros, que eram juízes, além de outros oficiais no governo persa, de Ereque, da Babilônia e de Susã, em Elam, escreveram uma carta; 10 e a eles se juntaram pessoas que o grande e nobre Assurbanípal forçou a se estabelecerem junto com os outros que estavam na província deste lado do rio Eufrates.

9 Then Rehum the commander, Shimshai the scribe, and their other associates, who were judges and other officers in the government, the Persians, men from Uruk [[ Some modern English translations read, " Erech " . ]] and Babylon, and the men from Susa (that is, the Elamites)—they wrote a letter— 10 and they were joined by the people whom the great and noble Ashurbanipal exiled and forced to settle in Samaria, along with the rest who were in the Province Beyond the River.

11 Esta é uma cópia da carta que eles enviaram a Artaxerxes: "Teus servos, homens da província deste lado do rio Eufrates, escrevem isto: 12 'Saiba o rei que os judeus que da tua parte vieram a nós foram a Jerusalém e estão reconstruindo aquela cidade rebelde e má. Eles estão restaurando os muros e reparando os seus fundamentos.

11 This is a copy of the letter that they sent to him: "To King Artaxerxes, your servants, men of the Province Beyond the River, write this: 12 Let the king know that the Jews who went from you have come against us in Jerusalem to build a rebellious city. They have completed the walls and repaired the foundations.

13 Que o rei saiba que, se esta cidade for construída e os muros finalizados, eles não pagarão os direitos, os impostos e os pedágios, e assim trarão prejuízo ao rei.

13 Now let the king know that if this city is built and the wall is completed, they will not give any tribute, taxes, or tolls, and that will harm the treasury of the kings.

14 Agora, visto que temos vivido às custas do palácio, não é apropriado vermos qualquer desonra acontecer ao rei. Por isso é que estamos recomendando ao rei 15 que busque no livro das crônicas de teus pais, e saberás que esta é uma cidade rebelde, que tem causado muitos problemas aos reis e às províncias; ela tem sido um centro de rebelião há muito tempo. Foi por essa razão que a cidade foi destruída. 16 Estamos informando ao rei que, se esta cidade e seus muros forem reconstruídos, não restará nada para ti na província deste lado do rio Eufrates'".

14 Surely because we have eaten the palace salt, it is not fitting for us to see any dishonor happen to the king. It is because of this that we are sending this to inform to the king 15 to search your father's record books and to learn that this is a rebellious city that will harm kings and provinces. It has caused many problems to the kings and provinces. It has been a center for rebellion from long ago. It was for this reason that the city was destroyed. 16 We are informing the king that if this city and wall are built, then there will be nothing remaining for you in the Province Beyond the River."

17 Então o rei mandou a seguinte resposta a Reum, a Sinsai e a seus companheiros que moravam em Samaria e na província além do rio Eufrates: "Que a paz seja convosco. 18 A carta que me enviastes foi traduzida e lida na minha presença. 19 Ordenei uma investigação e descobri que, desde tempos antigos, essa cidade tem se rebelado e se revoltado contra reis.

17 So the king sent out a reply to Rehum the commander and Shimshai the scribe and their associates in Samaria and the rest who were in the Province Beyond the River: "May peace be yours. 18 The letter that you sent me has been translated and read to me. 19 So a decree was issued by me, and they searched and found that for a long time that city has risen up against kings, and rebellion and revolt have been made in it.

20 Jerusalém tem sido governada por grandes reis que tiveram poder sobre toda a província além do rio Eufrates, e a eles se pagavam os direitos, os impostos e os pedágios. 21 Agora, ordenai a esses homens que parem de construir essa cidade até que eu faça um decreto. 22 Tomai cuidado para não negligenciar isto. Por que permitir que essa ameaça cresça e prejudique os interesses da realeza?".

20 Mighty kings have ruled over Jerusalem and had power over everything in the Province Beyond the River. Tribute, taxes, and tolls were paid to them. 21 Now, make a decree for these men to stop and not build this city until I make a decree. 22 Be careful not to neglect this. Why allow this threat to grow and cause more loss for the royal interests?

23 Quando o decreto do rei Artaxerxes foi lido perante Reum, Sinsai e seus companheiros, eles foram rapidamente a Jerusalém e forçaram os judeus a pararem a construção. 24 Assim, a obra no templo de Deus em Jerusalém parou até o segundo ano do reinado de Dario, rei da Pérsia.

23 When King Artaxerxes's decree was read before Rehum, Shimshai the scribe, and their associates, they went out quickly to Jerusalem and forced the Jews to stop building. 24 So the work on the house of God in Jerusalem stopped until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
