1 Enquanto Esdras orava e confessava, ele chorava e prostrava-se diante do templo de Deus. Uma grande multidão de homens israelitas, mulheres e crianças se juntaram a ele, e o povo chorava amargamente. 2 Secanias, filho de Jeiel, dos descendentes de Elão, disse a Esdras: "Fomos infiéis ao nosso Deus e temos casado com mulheres estrangeiras do povo de outras terras. Mas agora, apesar disso, ainda há esperança para Israel.

1 As Ezra prayed and confessed, he wept and threw himself down before the house of God. A very great assembly of Israelite men, women, and children gathered to him, for the people were weeping very greatly. 2 Shekaniah son of Jehiel of the descendants of Elam said to Ezra, "We have been unfaithful to our God and have married foreign women from the peoples of the land. But in spite of this, there is still hope for Israel.

3 Então, agora deixa-nos fazer uma aliança com nosso Deus para mandar sair todas as mulheres e seus filhos de acordo com os conselhos do Senhor e os conselhos daqueles que temem aos mandamentos do nosso Deus, e que se faça de acordo com a Lei. 4 Levanta-te, porque isso é uma tarefa tua, e nós estamos contigo. Sê forte e faze isso!"

3 So now let us make a covenant with our God to send out all the women and their children according to the Lord's instructions and the instructions of those who tremble at the commandments of our God, and let it be done according to the law. 4 Arise, for this thing is for you to carry out, and we are with you. Be strong and do this."

5 Então, Esdras levantou-se e fez os principais sacerdotes, os levitas e todos de Israel prometerem agir dessa maneira. Assim todos eles fizeram um juramento solene. 6 Esdras levantou-se de diante do templo de Deus e foi aos quartos de Joanã, filho de Eliasibe. Ele não comeu pão e nem bebeu água porque estava lamentando sobre a infidelidade daqueles que voltaram do cativeiro.

5 So Ezra rose and made the priestly officials, the Levites, and all of Israel promise to act in this way. So they all took a solemn oath. 6 Then Ezra rose from before the house of God and went to the rooms of Jehohanan son of Eliashib. He did not eat any bread or drink any water, since he was mourning concerning the faithlessness of those who had been in captivity.

7 Desse modo, eles anunciaram em Judá e Jerusalém, para todo o povo que voltou do exílio, que todos se reunissem em Jerusalém. 8 Qualquer um que não viesse em três dias, de acordo com os conselhos dos oficiais e anciãos, perderia todos os seus bens e seria excluído da grande congregação do povo que voltou do exílio.

7 So they sent word in Judah and Jerusalem to all the people back from exile to assemble in Jerusalem. 8 Anyone who did not come in three days according to the instructions from the officials and elders—all of his possessions would be forfeited, and he himself would be excluded from the great assembly of the people who had come back from exile.

9 Então, todos os homens de Judá e de Benjamin, em três dias, reuniram-se em Jerusalém. Era o nono mês e o vigésimo dia do mês. Todo o povo estava de pé na praça, diante do templo de Deus, e eles tremeram por causa desta palavra e da chuva. 10 Esdras, o sacerdote, levantou-se e disse: "Vós mesmos cometestes traição. Vós vivestes com mulheres estrangeiras, e assim a culpa de Israel foi aumentada.

9 So all the men of Judah and Benjamin assembled in Jerusalem in three days. It was the ninth month and the twentieth day of the month. All the people sat in the square before the house of God, trembling because of this matter and because of the rains. 10 Ezra the priest arose and said, "You yourselves have committed treason. You lived with foreign women so as to increase Israel's guilt.

11 Mas agora, confessai o vosso pecado a Yahweh, o Deus de vossos antepassados, e fazei a vontade Dele. Separai-vos dos povos da terra e das mulheres estrangeiras".

11 But now give confession to Yahweh, your ancestors' God, and do his will. Separate from the people of the land and from the foreign women."

12 Toda a congregação respondeu em alta voz: "Nós faremos conforme tu disseste. 13 Todavia, há um povo numeroso e é época da chuva. Nós não temos como ficar do lado de fora, e não é apenas um ou dois dias de trabalho, porque muitos de nós temos transgredido grandemente nesse assunto.

12 All the assembly answered in a loud voice, "We will do as you have said. 13 However, there are many people, and it is the rainy season. We have no strength to stand outside, and this is not only one or two days of work, since we have greatly transgressed in this matter.

14 Então deixa nossos líderes representarem toda a congregação. Todos os que permitiram que mulheres estrangeiras vivessem em nossas cidades virão, no tempo combinado com os anciãos e os juízes da cidade, até que a furiosa ira de nosso Deus se afaste de nós". 15 Jônatas, filho de Asael, e Jazeías, filho de Ticvá, apoiados por Mesulão e Sabetai, o levita, se opuseram a isso.

14 So let our officials represent all the assembly. Let all in our cities who have married foreign women come at an appointed time that will be appointed by the city elders and the city judges until the raging wrath of our God goes away from us." 15 Jonathan son of Asahel and Jahzeiah son of Tikvah opposed this, and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite supported them.

16 E assim fez o povo que retornou do exílio. Esdras, o sacerdote, escolheu homens, os chefes de famílias, segundo a casa de seus antepassados, todos eles identificados pelo nome, e eles examinaram o assunto no primeiro dia do décimo mês. 17 No primeiro dia do primeiro mês, eles terminaram de investigar todos os casos de homens que viviam com mulheres estrangeiras.

16 So the people who returned from exile did this. Ezra the priest selected men, the leaders in their ancestors' clans and houses—all of them by name, and they investigated the matter on the first day of the tenth month. 17 By the first day of the first month they had finished discovering which men had lived with foreign women.

18 Entre os descendentes dos sacerdotes havia aqueles que viveram com mulheres estrangeiras: dentre os descendentes de Jesua, filho de Jozadaque, e seus irmãos estavam Maaseias, Eliézer, Jaribe e Gedalias. 19 E então eles decidiram mandar embora suas mulheres. 18 Among the descendants of the priests there were those who had lived with foreign women. Among the descendants of Jeshua son of Jozadak and his brothers there were Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah. 19 So they determined to send their wives away. Since they were guilty, they offered a ram from the flock for their guilt.

20 Among the descendants of Immer: Hanani and Zebadiah. 21 Among the descendants of Harim: Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel, and Uzziah. 22 Among the descendants of Pashhur: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah.

Among the gatekeepers: Shallum, Telem, and Uri. 25 Among the rest of the Israelites—among the descendants of Parosh: Ramiah, Izziah, Malkijah, Mijamin, Eleazar, Malkijah, and Benaiah.
