1 Quando Samuel já era velho, ele fez seus filhos juízes sobre Israel. 2 O nome do seu primogênito era Joel, e o nome do seu segundo filho era Abias. Eles eram juízes em Berseba. 3 Seus filhos não andaram em seus caminhos, mas foram atrás de ganhos desonestos. Eles recebiam subornos e pervertiam a justiça.

1 When Samuel was old, he made his sons judges over Israel. 2 The name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second son was Abijah. They were judges in Beersheba. 3 His sons did not walk in his ways, but chased after dishonest gain. They took bribes and perverted justice.

4 Então, todos os anciãos de Israel se reuniram e vieram a Samuel, em Ramá. 5 Eles lhe disseram: "Vede, tu estás velho, e teus filhos não andam em teus caminhos. Nomeia para nós um rei para nos julgar, como em todas as nações".

4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah. 5 They said to him, "Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations."

6 Porém, isso desagradou a Samuel, quando eles disseram: "Dá-nos um rei para nos julgar". Então, Samuel orou a Yahweh. 7 Yahweh disse a Samuel: "Obedece à voz do povo em todas as coisas que eles te disserem; porque eles não têm rejeitado a ti, mas eles têm rejeitado a Mim como rei sobre eles.

6 But it displeased Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to judge us." So Samuel prayed to Yahweh. 7 Yahweh said to Samuel, "Obey the voice of the people in everything they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them.

8 Eles estão agindo, agora, da mesma forma que vêm agindo desde o dia em que Eu os tirei do Egito: abandonando-Me, e servindo a outros deuses. Do mesmo modo, eles estão fazendo contigo. 9 Agora, ouve-os; porém, adverte-os solenemente e deixa-os saber a forma com a qual o rei governará sobre eles".

8 The same deeds they have done since the day I brought them out of Egypt—forsaking me and serving other gods—they are now doing also to you. 9 Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know by what ordinances the king will reign over them."

10 Então, Samuel disse todas as palavras de Yahweh ao povo que estava pedindo um rei. 11 Ele disse: "Assim será como o rei reinará sobre vós. Ele tomará vossos filhos e os nomeará sobre os seus carros e para ser seus cavaleiros, e para correrem adiante dos seus carros. 12 nomerá para si mesmo capitães de mil soldados, e capitães de cinquenta soldados. Ele fará alguns deles arar seus campos, colher suas colheitas e outros para fazer suas armas de guerra e os equipamentos para seus carros.

10 So Samuel told all the words of Yahweh to the people who were asking for a king. 11 He said, "These will be the ordinances of the king who will reign over you. He will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and to be his horsemen, and to run before his chariots. 12 He will appoint for himself captains of thousands and captains of fifties. He will make some plow his ground, some reap his harvest, and some make his weapons of war and the equipment for his chariots.

13 Ele também tomará vossas filhas para serem perfumistas, cozinheiras e padeiras. 14 Tomará o melhor dos vossos campos, das vossas vinhas e dos vossos olivais para dar aos seus servos. 15 Ele tomará o dízimo dos vossos grãos e das vossas vinhas para dar a seus oficiais e a seus servos.

13 He will also take your daughters to be perfumers, cooks, and bakers. 14 He will take the very best of your fields, your vineyards, and your olive orchards, and give them to his servants. 15 He will take a tenth of your grain and of your vineyards and give to his officers and his servants.

16 Ele tomará vossos servos e vossas servas e o melhor dos vossos homens jovens e vossos jumentos; Ele colocará todos para trabalhar para si. 17 Ele tomará o dízimo do vosso rebanho, e vós sereis seus escravos. 18 Então, naquele dia, vós clamareis por causa do vosso rei, a quem escolhestes para vós mesmos; porém, Yahweh não vos responderá naquele dia".

16 He will take your male servants and your female servants and the best of your cattle [[ The Hebrew text can be read as: " young men " instead of " cattle. " ]] and your donkeys; he will put them all to work for him. 17 He will take the tenth of your flocks, and you will be his slaves. 18 Then on that day you will cry out because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves; but Yahweh will not answer you on that day."

19 Mas o povo recusou a ouvir Samuel; eles disseram: "Não! Deve haver um rei sobre nós, 20 para que possamos ser como as outras nações, e para que o nosso rei possa julgar-nos e sair adiante de nós e lutar as nossas batalhas".

19 But the people refused to listen to Samuel; they said, "No! There must be a king over us 20 so that we might be like all the other nations, and so that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles."

21 Quando Samuel ouviu todas as palavras do povo, ele as repetiu aos ouvidos de Yahweh. 22 Yahweh disse a Samuel: "Obedeça à voz deles e faça-lhes um rei". Então, Samuel disse aos homens de Israel: "Cada homem deve voltar para a sua própria cidade".

21 When Samuel heard all the words of the people he repeated them in the ears of Yahweh. 22 Yahweh said to Samuel, "Obey their voice and cause a king to reign over them." So Samuel said to the men of Israel, "Every man must go to his own city."
