1 Israel ficou em Sitim, e os homens começaram a se prostituir com as mulheres de Moabe, 2 pois os moabitas convidaram o povo aos sacrifícios dos seus deuses. E o povo comeu e se prostou diante dos deuses moabitas. 3 Os homens de Israel se juntaram em adoração a Baal-Peor, e a ira de Yahweh se acendeu contra Israel.

1 Israel stayed in Shittim, and the men began to prostitute themselves with women of Moab, 2 for the Moabites had invited the people to the sacrifices to their gods. So the people ate and bowed down to Moabite gods. 3 The men of Israel joined in worshiping Baal of Peor, and Yahweh's anger was kindled against Israel.

4 Yahweh disse a Moisés: "Mata todos os líderes do povo e os pendura diante de Mim para expô-los à luz do dia, para que a Minha fúria se retire de Israel". 5 Então, Moisés disse aos juízes de Israel: "Cada um de vós executará os homens de sua tribo que se juntaram em adoração a Baal-Peor".

4 Yahweh said to Moses, "Kill all the leaders of the people and hang them up before me to expose them in the daylight, so that my fierce anger may turn away from Israel." 5 So Moses said to Israel's leaders, "Each of you must execute his people who have joined in worshiping Baal of Peor."

6 Então, um israelita veio e trouxe aos membros de sua família uma mulher midianita. Isso acontenceu à vista de Moisés e de toda a comunidade do povo de Israel, enquanto eles choravam diante da Tenda do Encontro. 7 Quando Fineias, filho de Eleazar, filho de Arão, o sacerdote, viu isso, levantou-se do meio da comunidade e pegou uma lança.

6 Then one of the men of the sons of Israel came and brought among his family members a Midianite woman. This happened in the sight of Moses and all the community of the people of Israel, while they were weeping at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 7 When Phinehas son of Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, saw that, he rose up from among the community and took a spear in his hand.

8 Ele seguiu o homem israelita até Tenda e atravessou ambos os corpos com a lança, o homem israelita e a mulher. Então, a praga que o Senhor havia mandado ao povo de Israel, cessou. 9 Aqueles que morreram pela praga foram vinte e quatro mil.

8 He followed the man of Israel into the tent and thrust the spear through both of their bodies, both the man of Israel and the woman. So a plague that God had sent on the people of Israel stopped. 9 Those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand in number.

10 Yahweh falou com Moisés e disse: 11 "Fineias, filho de Eleazar, filho de Arão, o sacerdote, desviou a Minha ira contra Israel, porque ele tinha paixão pelo Meu zelo entre eles. Assim, não consumi o povo de Israel em Minha ira.

10 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said, 11 "Phinehas son of Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, has turned my rage away from the people of Israel because he was passionate with my zeal among them. So I have not consumed the people of Israel in my fierceness.

12 Portanto, dize: Yahweh diz: "Eu estou entregando a Fineias a Minha aliança de paz. 13 Esta será aliança de um sacerdócio perpétuo, para ele e sua descendência depois dele, pois foi zeloso a Mim, seu Deus. Ele fez expiação pelo povo de Israel"".

12 Therefore say, 'Yahweh says, "Look, I am giving to Phinehas my covenant of peace. 13 For him and his descendants after him, it will be a covenant of an everlasting priesthood because he was zealous for me, his God. He has atoned for the people of Israel."'"

14 O nome do homem israelita que foi morto com a mulher midianita era Zinri, filho de Salu, líder de uma casa paterna dos simeonitas. 15 O nome da mulher midianita que foi morta era Cozbi, filha de Zur, cabeça de clã e família dentre os midianitas.

14 Now the name of the man of Israel who was killed with the Midianite woman was Zimri son of Salu, a leader of an ancestor's family among the Simeonites. 15 The name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Kozbi daughter of Zur, who was head of a tribe and family in Midian.

16 Também Yahweh falou com Moisés e lhe disse: 17 "Trata os midianitas como inimigos e os ataca, 18 pois eles vos trataram como inimigos, com seu engano. Eles vos conduziram à maldade, no caso de Peor e no caso de sua irmã Cozbi, a filha do líder de Midiã, que foi morta no dia da praga, no caso de Peor".

16 So Yahweh spoke to Moses and said, 17 "Treat the Midianites as enemies and attack them, 18 for they treated you like enemies with their deceitfulness. They led you into evil in the case of Peor and in the case of their sister Kozbi, the daughter of a leader in Midian, who was killed on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor."
