1 Ora, Yahweh deixou estas nações para pôr Israel à prova, isto é, todos em Israel que não haviam lutado nas guerras em Canaã 2 (Ele fez isto para que a nova geração de israelitas, que não tinha experiência, aprendesse a guerrear): 3 cinco reis dos filisteus, todos os cananeus, os sidônios e os heveus que habitavam nos montes do Líbano, desde o monte Baal-Hermom até Lebo-Hamate.

1 Now Yahweh left these nations to test Israel, namely everyone in Israel who had not experienced any of the wars fought in Canaan. 2 (He did this to teach warfare to the new generation of the Israelites who had not known it before.) 3 These are the nations: the five rulers of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who lived in the Lebanon mountains, from Mount Baal Hermon to Lebo Hamath. 4 Estas nações foram deixadas por Yahweh para provar Israel, a fim de averiguar se obedeceriam aos mandamentos que Ele dera aos seus antepassados, por intermédio de Moisés. 5 Assim, o povo de Israel viveu entre os cananeus, os heteus, os amorreus, os perizeus, os heveus e os jebuseus. 6 Casaram-se com as filhas destes, assim como deram suas próprias filhas, em casamento, aos filhos deles. E adoraram os seus deuses.

4 These nations were left as a means by which Yahweh would test Israel, to confirm whether they would obey the commands he gave their ancestors through Moses. 5 So the people of Israel lived among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 6 Their daughters they took to be their wives, and their own daughters they gave to their sons, and they served their gods.

7 O povo de Israel fez o que era mau aos olhos de Yahweh e se esqueceu de Yahweh, o seu Deus. Eles adoraram os baalins e Aserá. 8 Por isso, a ira de Yahweh se acendeu contra Israel, e Ele os entregou nas mãos de Cuchã-Risataim, rei da Mesopotâmia. Eles serviram a Cuchã-Risataim por oito anos.

7 The people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of Yahweh and forgot Yahweh their God. They worshiped the Baals and the Asherahs. 8 Therefore, the anger of Yahweh was set on fire against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram Naharaim. The people of Israel served Cushan-Rishathaim for eight years.

9 Quando o povo de Israel clamou a Yahweh, Yahweh levantou um libertador que viesse socorrê-los, o qual os libertaria: Otoniel, filho de Quenaz, irmão mais novo de Calebe. 10 O Espírito de Yahweh o capacitou, e ele julgou Israel e saiu para a guerra. Yahweh deu-lhe vitória sobre Cuchã-Risataim, rei da Mesopotâmia. A mão de Otoniel derrotou Cuchã-Risataim. 11 A terra teve paz por quarenta anos. Então, Otoniel, filho de Quenaz, morreu.

9 When the people of Israel called out to Yahweh, Yahweh raised up someone who would come to help the people of Israel, and who would rescue them: Othniel son of Kenaz (Caleb's younger brother). 10 Yahweh's Spirit empowered him, and he judged Israel and he went out to war. Yahweh gave him victory over Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram. The hand of Othniel defeated Cushan-Rishathaim. 11 The land had peace for forty years. Then Othniel son of Kenaz died.

12 Depois disso, os israelitas fizeram, novamente, o que era mau aos olhos de Yahweh. Então, Yahweh deu forças a Eglom, rei de Moabe, para se apoderar dos israelitas, porque haviam feito o que era mau aos olhos de Yahweh. 13 Eglom se uniu aos amonitas e aos amalequitas e, juntos, derrotaram Israel e tomaram a posse da cidade das Palmeiras. 14 Os israelitas serviram a Eglom, rei de Moabe, por dezoito anos.

12 After that, the Israelites again did what was evil in the sight of Yahweh, and Yahweh gave strength to Eglon king of Moab to overpower the Israelites. 13 Eglon joined with the Ammonites and the Amalekites and they went and defeated Israel, and they took possession of the City of Palms. 14 The people of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab for eighteen years.

15 Quando o povo de Israel clamou a Yahweh, Yahweh levantou um libertador que os socorreria: Eúde, filho de Gera, um benjamita, homem canhoto. O povo de Israel o enviou, junto com os tributos, a Eglom, rei de Moabe.

15 When the people of Israel called out to Yahweh, Yahweh raised up a deliverer for them, Ehud son of Gera, a Benjamite, a left-handed man. The people of Israel sent him, with their tribute payment, to Eglon king of Moab.

16 Eúde fez para si uma espada de dois gumes, com um côvado de comprimento. Ele amarrou-a, por baixo da roupa, na sua coxa direita. 17 Ele entregou os tributos ao rei Eglom, de Moabe. Ora, Eglom era um homem muito gordo. 18 Após Eúde ter deixado ali os tributos, ele saiu com os homens que haviam ajudado a carregá-los.

16 Ehud made himself a sword that had two edges, one cubit in length; he bound it to his right thigh under his clothing. 17 He gave the tribute payment to King Eglon of Moab. (Now Eglon was a very fat man.) 18 After Ehud had presented the tribute payment, he left with those who had carried it in.

19 Todavia, o próprio Eúde, quando chegou ao lugar onde havia imagens esculpidas perto de Gilgal, voltou e disse: "Tenho uma mensagem secreta para ti, meu rei". Eglom disse: "Silêncio!". Então, todos que o serviam deixaram a sala. 20 Eúde veio até ele. O rei se encontrava sentado sozinho num quarto superior de verão. Eúde disse: "Tenho uma mensagem de Deus para ti". O rei levantou-se da sua cadeira.

19 As for Ehud himself, however, when he reached the place where the carved images were made near Gilgal, he turned and went back, and he said, "I have a secret message for you, my king." Eglon said, "Silence!" So all those serving him left the room. 20 Ehud came to him. The king was sitting by himself, alone in the coolness of the upper room. Ehud said, "I have a message from God for you." The king got up out of his seat.

21 Eúde estendeu a mão esquerda e tirou a espada que estava amarrada na sua coxa direita, e a cravou no corpo do rei. 22 O cabo da espada também entrou nele com a lâmina. A ponta da espada saiu pelas suas costas e a gordura se fechou sobre ela, pois Eúde não tirou a espada da barriga do rei. 23 Então, Eúde saiu para o pórtico, fechou e trancou as portas do quarto superior atrás de si.

21 Ehud reached with his left hand and took the sword from his right thigh, and he stabbed it into the king's body. 22 The hilt of the sword also went into him following the blade. The tip of the sword came out of his back and the fat closed over it, for Ehud did not pull the sword out of his belly. 23 Then Ehud went out on the porch and closed the doors of the upper room behind him and locked them.

24 Após sua saída, os servos do rei vieram e, vendo que as portas da sala superior estavam trancadas, pensaram: "Certamente ele está fazendo as necessidades no quarto de verão". 25 Mas eles foram ficando cada vez mais preocupados até sentirem que estavam negligenciando seus deveres, pois o rei ainda não havia aberto as portas do quarto superior. Então, tomaram a chave e abriram-nas, e ali estava o seu senhor, caído no chão, morto.

24 After Ehud had gone, the king's servants came; they saw that the doors of the upper room were locked, so they thought, "Surely he is relieving himself in the coolness of the upper room." 25 They were growing more concerned until they felt they were neglecting their duty when the king still did not open the doors to the upper room. So they took the key and opened them, and there lay their master, fallen to the floor, dead.

26 Enquanto seus servos estavam esperando, imaginando o que deveriam fazer, Eúde escapou, passando pelo lugar onde havia as imagens esculpidas de ídolos e, dali, fugiu para Seirá. 27 Quando ele chegou, soou a trombeta na região montanhosa de Efraim. Então, o povo de Israel desceu das colinas, e Eúde os liderava.

26 While the servants were waiting, wondering what they should do, Ehud escaped and passed beyond the place where there were carved images of idols, and so he escaped to Seirah. 27 When he arrived, he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim. Then the people of Israel went down with him from the hills, and he was leading them.

28 Ele lhes disse: "Segui-me, pois Yahweh derrotará os vossos inimigos, os moabitas". Eles o seguiram, tomaram as passagens do Jordão dos moabitas e não permitiram que ninguém atravessasse o rio. 29 Naquele tempo, mataram cerca de dez mil homens de Moabe.Todos fortes e hábeis, porém, nenhum deles escapou. 30 Foi assim que, naquele dia, Moabe foi subjugado pela força de Israel. E a terra teve descanso por oitenta anos.

28 He said to them, "Follow me, for Yahweh is about to defeat your enemies, the Moabites." They followed him and they captured the fords of the Jordan across from the Moabites, and they did not allow anyone to cross the river. 29 At that time they killed about ten thousand men of Moab, and all were strong and capable men. Not one escaped. 30 So that day Moab was subdued by the strength of Israel, and the land had rest for eighty years.

31 Depois de Eúde, o juiz seguinte foi Sangar, filho de Anate, que matou seiscentos filisteus com uma vara utilizada para conduzir bois. Ele também libertou Israel do perigo.

31 After Ehud the next judge was Shamgar son of Anath who killed 600 men of the Philistines with a stick used to goad oxen. He also delivered Israel from danger.
