1 Estarei no meu posto de vigilância e tomarei posição na torre da guarda, e observarei atentamente para ver o que Ele me dirá, e como devo agir com a minha queixa. [Em vez de "como devo agir com a minha queixa", que é o que o texto hebraico traz, algumas versões modernas trazem "como eu deveria responder quando ele responde à minha queixa" ou "como eu deveria responder quando ele me repreende".]

1 I will stand at my guard post and station myself on the watchtower, and I will watch carefully to see what he will say to me and how I should turn from my complaint. [[ Instead of " how I should turn from my complaint " , which is the reading of the copies of the Hebrew text, some modern translations have " how I should answer when he replies to my complaint " or " how I should answer when he rebukes me " . ]]

2 Yahweh me respondeu e disse: "Grava a visão, e escreve claramente em tábuas para que quem passar correndo a possa ler. 3 Porque a visão ainda é para o futuro, e pronunciará no final, e não falhará. Ainda que ela se atrase, espera-a; porque, com certeza, virá e não tardará.

2 Yahweh answered me and said, "Record this vision, and write plainly on the tablets so that the one reading them might run. 3 For the vision is yet for the appointed time and will testify and not fail. Though it delays, wait for it. For it will surely come and will not tarry.

4 Olha! Aquele cujos desejos não são corretos é arrogante; mas o justo viverá pela sua fé. 5 Assim como o vinho é traiçoeiro, o homem arrogante também não permanece. A sua ganância é como a morte, que nunca está satisfeita. Ele ajunta para si todas as nações e recolhe para si todos os povos.

4 Look! The one whose desires are not right within him is puffed up. But the righteous will live by his faith.\m 5 Indeed, as wine is treacherous, even so an arrogant man does not stay at home. He has made his throat as wide as Sheol; and like death, he is never satisfied. He has gathered together all the nations, and he has assembled to himself all the people.

6 Por acaso, não criarão todos esses um dito para ridicularizá-lo, e uma canção de zombaria contra ele, e dirão: 'Ai daquele que acumula o que não é seu! Pois até quando irás acumular o peso dos penhores, que tu tens tomado?' 7 Por acaso não se levantarão de repente os que te mordem, e se despertarão os que te aterrorizam? Tu te tornarás uma vítima para eles! 8 Porque tu saqueaste muitas nações, todo o remanescente dos povos te saqueará. Pois derramaste sangue humano e agiste com violência contra a terra, as cidades e todos os seus habitantes.

6 Will all these not take up a proverb and mockery, riddles about him, saying, 'Woe to the one increasing what is not his! For how long will you increase the weight of the pledges you have taken?'2 7 Will the ones biting at you not rise up suddenly, and the ones terrifying you awaken?2 You will become a victim for them.2 8 Because you have plundered many peoples, all the remnant of the peoples will plunder you.2 For you have shed human blood and acted with violence against the land, the cities, and all who live in them.

9 'Ai daquele que cobiça ganhos desonestos para sua casa, a fim de pôr seu ninho no alto para se manter seguro da mão do mal!' 10 Tu planejaste vergonha para tua casa, porque eliminaste muitas pessoas, e pecaste contra ti mesmo. 11 Pois as pedras clamarão da parede, e as vigas de madeira lhes responderão:

9 'Woe to the one who gets evil gains for his house,2 so he can set his nest on high to deliver himself from the hand of evil.'2 10 You have devised shame for your house by cutting off many people, and have sinned against your life.2 11 For the stones will cry out from the wall, and the rafters of timber will answer them,

12 'Ai daquele que edifica uma cidade com sangue, e que estabelece uma vila com iniquidade!' 13 Não provém de Yahweh dos Exércitos que os povos trabalhem para o fogo e que todas as outras nações se cansem em vão? 14 Ainda assim, a terra será cheia do conhecimento da glória de Yahweh, como as águas cobrem o mar.

12 'Woe to the one who builds a city with blood, and who establishes a town in iniquity.'2 13 Is it not from Yahweh of hosts2 that peoples labor for fire, and nations weary themselves in vain?2 14 Yet the land will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of Yahweh as the waters cover the sea.

15 'Ai daquele que incentiva seu próximo a beber! Tu que entornas sua garrafa, pressionando-o a se embebedar, a fim de veres a sua nudez!' 16 Tu serás cheio de vergonha, em vez de glória. Agora é tua vez! Bebe, e mostra tua incircuncisão! O cálice da mão direita de Yahweh passará por ti e a desgraça cobrirá a tua glória.

15 'Woe to the one who forces his neighbors to drink— you express your anger [[ There is some question about whether the Hebrew should be translated as " anger " or as " wineskin " . ]] over and you make them drunk in order to look at their nakedness.'2 16 You will be filled with shame instead of glory. Now it is your turn! Drink, and you will expose your uncircumcised foreskin!2 The cup in Yahweh's right hand is coming around to you,2 and disgrace will cover your glory.

17 A violência feita ao Líbano te cobrirá, e a destruição dos animais te aterrorizará, porque derramaste sangue humano, e procedeste com violência contra a terra, contra as cidades e contra todos seus habitantes.

17 The violence done to Lebanon will overwhelm you and the devastation of animals will terrify you.2 For you have shed the blood of man and you have acted with violence against the land, the cities, and all who live in them.

18 Qual proveito tem a figura esculpida para ti? Pois, aquele que a esculpiu ou quem molda a figura do metal fundido é um professor de mentiras; porque ele confia na obra de suas próprias mãos, quando faz esses deuses mudos. 19 'Ai daquele que diz à madeira: Desperta! Ou à pedra muda: Levanta-te!' Por acaso essas coisas ensinam? Vê! Estão cobertas de ouro e de prata, mas não há fôlego algum nelas. 20 Porém, Yahweh está no Seu santo templo! Que toda a terra se cale diante Dele."

18 What profit is there in a carved image? For a carver has carved it! Or a cast metal figure, a teacher of lies? For the maker trusts in what he has made when he makes these worthless idols. 19 'Woe to the one saying to the wood, Wake up! Or to the silent stone, Arise!' Do these things teach? See, it is overlaid with gold and silver, but there is no breath at all within it. 20 But Yahweh is in his holy temple! Be silent before him, all the land."
